The Montessori School: Nurturing the love of learning.

Our Montessori program, which serves children 2 years, 9 months through 6 years of age, recognizes and accommodates the child's natural desire to learn. Upon completion, children are qualified to enter first grade.

The Montessori classroom is a purposefully planned, aesthetically pleasing, well-mannered, and unhurried learning environment. It provides a wealth of distinctive learning activities that are multi-sensory, sequential, self-corrective in design, and are systematically organized into specific areas of interest:

  • Practical Life Experiences to enable the child to gain independence in everyday living skills.
  • Sensory Activities to develop and refine the perceptions of the five senses.
  • Language to develop interest in the written word using phonics-based writing and reading skills.
  • Mathematics to discover numeral/quantity relationships using hands-on materials.
  • Science to explore and experiment in both the natural and physical sciences.
  • Geography to investigate and understand the earth and its features.
  • Social Studies to respect the similarities and differences among the world's cultures.
  • French to learn the language and customs of another country.
  • Art and Music to release the child's creative spirit.
  • Physical Outdoor Play to promote large motor development.

Each child's daily learning is based on his or her interest and ability. The teacher facilitates learning by observation, incidental assistance, general guidance, and direct instruction. As a result, Montessori instruction instills confidence, concentration, a sense of order, inner discipline, independence, and, most importantly, a love of learning.

Our AMS-certified Montessori School offers full- and half-day sessions, as follows:

  • Full-day: 9:00 am — 3:00 pm
  • Morning half-day: 9:00 am — 11:30 am
  • Afternoon half-day: 12:30 pm — 3:00 pm

Miriam Hinnant, Director of the Montessori School, holds a B.A. in Elementary Education. She completed the Montessori teacher training program in 1979 (MECA), and is certified by the American Montessori Society.
